Program Description

Aerial Work Platforms (AWP's) play a vital role in various industries, allowing workers to access elevated areas for tasks such as construction, maintenance, and inspection. To ensure the safety of both operators and those working nearby, it is imperative to follow the relevant standards and regulations. This safety training course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to operate Aerial Work Platforms safely and in accordance with applicable laws and industry standards.

The course covers the following topics:

1. ​​Acts & Regulations: In this section, participants will delve into the essential legal framework governing the operation of Aerial Work Platforms in North America, with a focus on applicable laws, regulations and standards in Ontario. This knowledge is critical for achieving compliance with Ontario's safety regulations and creating a secure workplace.
   
   Specifically, students will be informed about the following key acts and regulations:

   • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA): This act sets out the rights and responsibilities of employers, supervisors, and workers to ensure a safe working environment. It includes provisions related to equipment safety, fall protection, and hazard mitigation.

   • Regulation 213/91 (Construction Projects): This regulation is crucial for the construction industry and includes specific requirements for Aerial Work Platforms used on construction sites.

   • Regulation 851 (Industrial Establishments): This regulation under the OHSA covers workplace safety requirements, including equipment maintenance and inspection procedures in industrial establishments.

   • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) B354 Series: The CSA B354 standards provide comprehensive guidelines for the safe use and maintenance of Aerial Work Platforms. Participants will gain insights into how to align their practices with these industry standards.
      

2. Introduction to Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs): Participants will receive a comprehensive introduction to Aerial Work Platforms, encompassing an overview of different types such as scissor and boom lifts along with their various applications. This course will cover the fundamental components, features, and functions of AWPs, enabling operators to make informed decisions about their selection for diverse tasks.
    

3. Accidents & Hazards in AWP Operations: This module focuses on recognizing common accidents and hazards associated with AWP operations. Participants will gain insights into identifying factors like uneven terrain, overhead obstacles, electrical hazards, and more. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of proper training, situational awareness, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate the risk of accidents.
    

4. Fall Protection for Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs): Fall protection is a critical aspect of AWP safety. This segment will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of fall protection systems and equipment tailored specifically for Aerial Work Platforms. Participants will be trained in the correct usage of fall protection systems and how to prevent falls while working at elevated heights.
    

5. Equipment Inspections & Safety Checks: This part of the course will educate participants on the vital role of equipment inspections and safety checks. They will learn how to perform pre-operation, during-operation, and post-operation inspections to ensure that the AWP is in optimal working condition. Participants will also acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and address potential issues before they pose a safety risk.
    

6. Controls & Function Checks for AWP's: Participants will be provided with an overview of AWP controls and functions. They will understand how to operate the AWP safely, including maneuvers, steering, and platform controls. Familiarization in these controls is essential for introducing operators to the equipment they will use in the field.
    

7. Operation & Stability of AWP's: This module will emphasize the operational aspects of Aerial Work Platforms, including load capacity, platform positioning, and stability considerations. Participants will learn how to maintain stability while working at various heights and on different terrains, thereby enhancing overall safety.
    

8. Refuelling for AWP's: Safe refuelling practices are paramount to prevent accidents and fires. In this course segment, participants will gain an understanding of proper refuelling procedures, the recommended fuels to use, and the essential precautions to take when refuelling Aerial Work Platforms.

Participants will also have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their understanding of the material through hands-on exercises using a scissor and/or boom lift.  Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to work safely with Aerial Work Platforms.
