Program Description

This training course on the basics of fall protection in industrial establishments in Ontario is designed to equip workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to prevent falls and mitigate the risks associated with working at heights. The course covers the legal responsibilities of employers and workers, the hazards and controls associated with working at heights, and the best practices for fall prevention.

The course covers the following topics:

  1. History of Fall Protection: This topic will provide a brief overview of the history of fall protection and statistics on fall-related accidents and fatalities in industrial establishments in Ontario. Participants will learn about the importance of fall protection and the need to prevent fall-related accidents.
     

  2. Fall Protection Regulations: Understanding the safety regulations and laws concerning working at heights in Ontario is important. Participants will learn what they need to know about Regulation 851 for Industrial Establishments, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards. Participants will learn about the legal requirements for fall protection in the workplace and the responsibilities of employers and employees.
     

  3. Using Ladders: This topic will cover the safe use of ladders in industrial establishments, including ladder selection, set up, and maintenance. Participants will learn about the different types of ladders, how to inspect them for defects, and how to use them safely.
     

  4. Controlling Fall Hazards: This topic will cover the various methods of eliminating or controlling fall hazards. Participants will learn about the different types of fall hazards and the appropriate methods for controlling them.
     

  5. Fall Protection Equipment: This topic will cover the different types of fall protection systems, including harnesses, lanyards, travel restraint systems, and self-retracting lifelines. Participants will learn about the proper selection and use of fall protection equipment and the importance of proper fit and adjustment.
     

  6. Inspection of Equipment: This topic will cover the inspection and maintenance of fall protection equipment. Participants will learn about the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of fall protection equipment to ensure its safety and effectiveness.
     

  7. Use of Fall Arrest Equipment: This topic will cover the proper use of fall arrest equipment. Participants will learn about the importance of proper fit and adjustment of equipment and the proper use of shock absorbers. Participants will also learn how to calculate their fall distance.
     

  8. Anchor Points: This topic will cover the selection and use of anchor points for fall protection equipment. Participants will learn about the different types of anchor points, including fixed and temporary, and the importance of proper installation and inspection.
     

  9. Rescue Planning: This topic will cover the importance of rescue planning in the event of a fall-related accident. Participants will learn about the different types of rescue systems and the importance of proper training and preparation for emergency situations.

 

Throughout the course, participants will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their understanding of the material through hands-on exercises, case studies and assessments. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to work safely at heights.
